When You Feel Like Complaining

Life is demanding.  You got more than you bargained for.  Your life is not what you expected it to be.  You want “your” life back.  Does this sound familiar?

Social media allows for many observations.  Amongst the posts of life achievements, family photos, and milestones; I also see so much pain, including regret, disappointment, insecurity, worry, and envy.  At times, this pain is masked in a post with a bow added for appearance sake.  We wouldn’t want anyone to think that our life is less than perfect, now would we?

Recently, I saw a post that made me feel sad.  It was a post that lacked gratitude for blessings disguised as work.  I think back to times when I complained about my life realities pertaining to work.  I wanted to get into medical school and I did; but, then I complained about the lack of sleep and the time commitment involved.  I wanted to graduate medical school and become a doctor and I did; but, then I complained about the time that I spent working as a resident physician.  Then, through trauma, I lost the ability to complain about those particular commitments and I began to feel regret for my lack of gratitude.  I had been given opportunities that so many people dream of and never have the chance to experience.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Colossians 3:23-24

No matter what type of work you do, your work has purpose.  Your life has purpose and that purpose is not your own.

Many plans are in a man’s mind, but it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand.

Proverbs 19:21

Today, I challenge you to reassess your mind.  During moments of fatigue, weakness, and dissatisfaction, know that you are in a place to grow closer to God.  “I got more than I signed up for” moments serve as great opportunities to lean on Him for strength.  You have been blessed with the ability to work.  You are blessed the opportunity to serve others.  You are blessed the opportunity to receive the rewards for seeking Him when you are feeling like you want your life back.

…You may talk to Me as much as you like about the difficulty of the path we are following.  I understand better than anyone else the stresses that have afflicted you.  You can ventilate safely to Me, because talking with Me tempers your thoughts and helps you see things from My perspective.  Complaining to others is another matter altogether.  It opens the door to deadly sins such as self-pity and rage.  Whenever you are tempted to grumble, come to Me and talk it out.  As you open up to Me, I will put My thoughts in your mind and My song in your heart.
