How To Stay Committed

How committed are you?

How Committed Are You? | www.drnicolemeastman.com

Do you find yourself falling short in the area of accountability often?  I know it is hard to take a good hard look at ourselves, but this is a really important question to ask.

I have to admit, in the past I have cancelled plenty of commitments that I had made.

“I’m too tired”

“I’m overextended”

“I forgot”

“I have other family commitments”

“I’m in pain”

These are just some of the reasons (*clears throat* excuses) I had allowed myself, in order to have an escape from something I said that I would dedicate my time to.  Sound familiar?

In my defense, I also used to have a problem with not being able to say, “No.”  Maybe that is familiar to you also?  I have definitely had to learn how to set boundaries along this life journey.  Now I can say “No” (without regret) quite easily…see I just said it twice 😉  “No, no, no”…not that hard really.

Ok, so moving on…

One day, a few months back, I was listening to a service by Joyce Meyer.  I am going to tell you right now, I LOVE Joyce.  I think you either love her or you are terrified by her, because she is strong, bold, honest, and well…she just gives it to you!!  I LOVE it!!

So, here I am listening to her and she says,

“YOU KNOW WHAT PEOPLE ARE MISSING THESE DAYS?!”

No, Joyce, I don’t!  Tell me, because you’ve got my attention!! :)

“THEY ARE MISSING COMMITMENT!!”, she says.

OUCH!! :(

This really hit me deep.  It resonated with my soul.  It changed me from that moment forward.

I have to say, from that moment forward, I have been a changed person in regards to commitment.  I think I can honestly say that I have gone from a 7 to a 9 (on a scale of 0 – 10 from completely uncommitted to a commitment rockstar!).  I don’t get a 10, because I still fail in terms of goal setting.  I say that I am going to post a blog twice per week, but there are times that I fall through on that.  There are times when I tell myself that I am going to be more patient with my husband, and then I feel myself getting annoyed.  There are times when I lie to myself and say that I will just have one piece of (you insert your favorite food here), and then I indulge in just a bite more.

There is always room for improvement, right?

However, NOW, when I am feeling tired and less than motivated to following through on something, when I do not really feel like honoring my word…

I hear Joyce, SCREAMING IN MY EAR…

“DO YOU KNOW WHAT PEOPLE ARE MISSING THESE DAYS?!”

and…

That is all I need,

that less than gentle reminder,

to get myself going

and to be committed to my word.

Reflection Questions:

How committed are you on a scale of 0 – 10.  Be honest with yourself.

What reasons excuses do you use when you want to back out of a commitment?

Tell me, what areas of your life would benefit from greater commitment?
